Snake Enclosure Setup Guide for Australian Keepers
How to set up a secure, species-appropriate snake enclosure in Australia: sizing, substrate, heat gradients, thermostats, hides, water and hygiene.

Enclosure sizing should be based on the adult size of the species, not the size of the animal you currently have. A hatchling carpet python does not need a full adult enclosure on day one — smaller, secure enclosures for juveniles are easier to maintain thermal gradients in and can reduce stress — but you should plan and budget for the adult setup from the start rather than repeatedly upgrading in a hurry.
As a general rule, the enclosure needs to be large enough for the snake to thermoregulate — that is, to move between a warm side and a cool side — while still feeling secure. An enclosure that is too large and open for a nervous animal can be as stressful as one that is too small. Ventilation, sightlines, and hide placement matter as much as raw floor space.
Different species have different tolerances for enclosure style — arboreal species need height and climbing structure, terrestrial pythons need floor space. Heat gradients and thermostats
A thermal gradient — a warm end and a cool end — lets the animal choose its own temperature rather than being forced into a single ambient reading. Heat sources for snakes in Australian setups typically include heat cords, heat mats, ceramic heat emitters, or ,in some setups, radiant heat panels, positioned to create a warm hide zone without heating the whole enclosure evenly.
A thermostat is not optional. Any heat source connected directly to mains power without a thermostat risks overheating and burns, particularly overnight or if ambient room temperature swings. Use a thermostat with a probe placed where the animal will actually be sitting, not just taped to the enclosure wall, and check the reading against a separate digital thermometer occasionally to make sure the two agree.

Substrate, hides and furniture
Substrate choice affects humidity retention, cleaning frequency, and impaction risk if a keeper feeds inside the enclosure on loose substrate. Common choices among Australian keepers include newspaper or butcher's paper (cheap, easy to monitor, low aesthetic), and various commercial substrates such as coconut fibre-based products or bark-based mixes that hold humidity better for species that need it. Whatever you choose, match it to the species' natural humidity needs and your own cleaning routine — a substrate you cannot keep on top of is worse than a simple one you can.
Every enclosure needs at least two hides — one on the warm end, one on the cool end — so the animal is never forced to choose between thermoregulating and feeling secure. Branches, cork bark, and other furniture support natural behaviour, especially for semi-arboreal species, and can also help break sightlines in larger enclosures to reduce stress.
Water and ventilation
A water bowl large enough for the animal to fully submerge is useful for shedding and hydration, and should be checked and refreshed regularly — stagnant water is both a hygiene and a health issue. For species that need higher humidity around shedding time, some keepers add a humid hide (a small enclosed space with damp sphagnum moss) rather than raising humidity across the whole enclosure.
Ventilation needs to balance humidity retention with air exchange — stale, overly humid air encourages respiratory issues and bacterial or fungal growth, while too much airflow can dry the enclosure out and make it hard to hold a gradient. Front-opening enclosures with vents on opposing sides generally perform better than fully sealed tubs unless the tub is specifically designed for reptile ventilation.
Hygiene and cleaning routine
Spot-clean waste as soon as you see it rather than waiting for a scheduled clean, and do a full substrate change and enclosure wipe-down on a regular interval suited to the substrate and species. Reptile-safe disinfectants are widely available; avoid strong household chemicals that can leave harmful residue.
