The problem with care sheets and cage tags

Most reptiles change hands at least once in their life — sold as a hatchling, rehomed years later, or passed between breeders as part of a project. The usual way history travels with the animal is a paper care sheet, a printed pedigree, or just the seller's word. All three have the same weakness: they are detached from the animal itself. A care sheet gets left in a box, a printed pedigree gets separated from the animal at an expo, and verbal history is only as good as the memory and honesty of whoever is passing it on.

A paper care sheet is a snapshot at the moment it was written — it does not update, and it is disconnected from the animal the moment it is misplaced. A HerpTrace ID is different in three important ways:
